Past Conventions
This is a place on the site for me to celebrate past conventions and leave a record of events I ran and played. I’m starting this at the end of 2023 so I’m going to be focusing on the events I ran and hopefully build in highlights from specific players and characters!
U-COn 2023 (First special guest appearance for this con)
I ran six events at this convention, played two, and participated in the game designer interview on Friday night!
Gamemaster
Gotham City Misfits: The Invitation-Killer Moth has to get his group of D-list degenerates to War World when they receive an invitation to participate in a grand tournament from Mongul himself!
Highlights: Condiment King spending a Matinee Chip to bypass a fight with Green Lantern due to Hal’s bowel distress. Beating the Furies, including killing at least two of them (possibly prompting reprisal by Granny Goodness in our next scenario…) Dropping Mongul with two jars of peanut butter and a teddy bear machine gun.
X-Men: Pariah- The X-Men must band together to rescue a new mutant with a mysterious new ability.
Highlights: Dynamic between Colossus and Wolverine. Beast and Iceman teamwork to smash frozen Brotherhood members. Fastball special into Dormammu’s face. The way all of the X-Men handled the scared teen trying to control his powers.
TCC: The Dragon of Parkhurst Manor- Titan City, 1936. The students of the Silverthorne Academy must help a baby dragon return to its parents when they rescue it from monster smugglers outside Titan City.
Highlights: Andy coming back to play Lillian! Heroes teaming up to stomp a PL 12 baddy. Acting like reasonable adults at the police checkpoint.
TCC: Last Rites- Titan City 1928. Magic-users across Titan City hear an ominous portent from a dead wizard claiming that if he isn't restored to life within 48 hours, all will suffer.
Highlights: Laura’s Isabella as always! Excellent bouncing back and forth with split party members. Kariwase’s depiction. Felt like a solid story in canon rather than a just a one-off that doesn’t fit continuity.
Legends of Tomorrow: A Little Less Conversation- The Legends must track down a time-displaced Elvis during an Elvis impersonator contest in 80s Vegas. How hard could it be to find an Elvis in a Elvis stack.
Highlights: A bunch of players I haven’t played with before and Laura! Players hadn’t seen the show before but still managed to make it feel like an episode of the show. Heatwave winning the Elvis contest. “Elton John is on too many drugs to be mind-controlled.”
Superman for All Seasons- Paragons from across the multiverse are called to stop a rogue Superman from destroying reality.
Highlights: More players I haven’t played with before. Vann’s Invincible was great and he even got to beat up Omni-Man. Steve’s Spider-Man getting to be a big damn hero!
Player
Star Wars: Relic Rich, Cash Poor- A continuation in the story of the Star Wars character I’ve been playing at cons for the last few years: Hodo Par, a former Imperial archeologist turned smuggler. We still had Mace Windu’s lightsaber from our last caper and managed to find a buyer in Moff Gideon. Unfortunately, the saber was stolen by fallen Jedi and we had to take a quick trip to Yavin IV where Hodo allowed Darth Nihilus to possess him. We defeated the Jedi, recovered the burned out saber, and made a successful trade with Moff Gideon.
Mutant City Blues: Cell Division- My first time playing with my friend Vic as Gamemaster and it was a great time! I played a former traffic cop who was promoted to detective when his mind reading mutation manifested. We were drawn into this case during a seemingly random mutant terrorist attack on the Bean in Chicago. This game was very cerebral with a lot of deep investigation and roleplayed interrogations which culminated in an anti-mutant conspiracy to drum up violence against mutants. This game could easily have been twice as long as the four hour time slot, but Vic did a great job of jamming all of that story into the time we had. I’d be happy to play this game system again, although maybe with a fresh brain and not after eight hours of GMing beforehand.
